About A Healthy Hint

Two food lovers sharing their love of nutrition through ingredient focused recipes and healthy hints

Healthy Hot Chocolate

One thing that just feels like Christmas in a cup is hot coco. There is something incredibly comforting and nostalgic about it, and we can’t get enough this time of year. We thought we would try a recipe that allows us to have more than just one cup of this creamy drink by cutting back on the sugar and fat that the Starbucks version has, or the Swiss Miss instant pack. One thing that was mildly disturbing as we researched this blog post was seeing that Starbucks has their hot chocolate under the “Kids Drinks” section. This is not a Starbucks bash, and we are the first to admit we go almost daily, but consider rethinking giving your child 43 grams of sugar in a grande cup of coco while you’re making your next coffee run. Or just simply make the kids this recipe instead. Yes– let’s go with that option.

A Healthy Hint’s Gift Guide

Why is gift giving so stressful in our adult years? It feels impossible to shop for friends and family, knowing they can buy what they want, and it can be slightly overwhelming trying to figure out every item outside of the go-to gift Target or Nordstrom card. We are not knocking that and will go the gift card route too, but wanted to spark a little inspiration. We rounded up a few of our favorite ideas to make gift shopping a little easier this year, and tried to tie them all to mental or physical health in some way. Consider this list itself good for your mental health by taking away a little stress… We had to tie this post back to health somehow, obviously.  Continue reading

Tahini Peanut Butter Freezer Fudge

Now that we are super serious, fancy food bloggers, we decided to kick things up a notch and experiment with a new ingredient: tahini. After a spark of inspiration from Kale Junkie (Life Changing Tahini Chocolate Chip Cookies anyone?) and a little bit of our other favorite ingredient, Peanut Butter, this recipe was born. Tahini was new to us, and it may very well be new to you too, so we wanted to give you a little background before diving into this GLORIOUS fudge recipe. Yeah, we said it. Glorious. That may even be an understatement, because this little treat is just that good.

Ginger Molasses Cookies

If pumpkin is considered to be the staple comfort flavor of fall, ginger takes the gold medal for comfort flavor of winter. We were really excited about this fall cookie recipe and post for a few reasons! These cookies are one of our favorite holiday treats, and there is something about the fusion of ginger and molasses that just tastes Christmas-cozy. Ginger is a flavor we did not fully embrace until adulthood. We wised up, and now we each keep a bottle of pickled ginger in our fridge, ground ginger on the shelf, and ginger tea in the pantry. Bear with us as we dive into why we do this, and try to convert you into a ginger fanatic, too.

White Chicken Enchilada Cauliflower Casserole

Casserole. Was this a word that struck fear into your heart as a child? Why is it that we associate this word with some suspect looking, mushy nightmare from our youth, even if our grandmothers DID make it with love? We are going to vanquish your fear of this word, and maybe just maybe completely reshape the way you feel about it, too.

Egg White Cups

To be perfectly clear, our lives are really not THAT busy. We do not have children, we aren’t married, we do not have a second job, and we do not have a ton of obligations outside of work, A Healthy Hint and our social lives. However, we are still people who love to maximize our time, and one of the best ways we know how to do that is by meal prepping our food every week. We usually prep our lunches and dinners, but we have found we can take this life hack a step further and meal prep our breaksfast, too. We want to share a few ideas with you on these easy yet delicious Egg White Bites.  Continue reading

Pecan Pumpkin Pie Bars

A true coming of age sign is when you learn that you love nuts in dessert. They give extra texture, they add more flavor, and they make every bite a little more delicious. It took us 20-something years to learn this lesson, but we are so glad we finally appreciate a more sophisticated take on treats. Pecans in particular are the official nut of the season. Have you noticed how much we like using them in our recipes? Here’s looking at you, Roasted Veggies. Obviously we are about to educate you on why that is, and then give you a delicious recipe to try– just in time for Thanksgiving! Prepare to woo your mother-in-law, the hard-to-please granny, and -of course- yourself with these delicious bars.

Parmesan Roasted Carrots

The Monday Night Football game is on, sounds of the competition rippling through the air. You have a creamy garlic dip in front of you, wafting around you with it’s dreamy, delicious aroma. You are surrounded by friends, by laughter, and suddenly — a craving. A craving for a crunch, for something to really round out the dip, and to bring joy into your heart in a way that only food can. You know the beautiful crinkle sound that comes from opening a bag of salty potato chips? Well tough shit- you don’t get to hear it, because you have to have carrots with your dip. Shhhh. Take a deep breath, because carrots don’t have to be boring. In fact, with our new recipe, you can discover that they can even be delicious sans garlic dip. Continue reading

Turkey Butternut Squash Chili

We live in Phoenix, Arizona, which means we have about a 9 day window every year to enjoy true winter recipes, since it will actually be cold enough for a brief, sweet window of time. Within this tiny window, we embrace the chunky side of life. Chunky sweaters, a chunky boot and sock combo, and the glaringly obvious: chunky chili. Chunk-less chili is a depressing oxymoron of sorts, and we are not having it. Naturally, we want to have a health conscious and filling recipe that still hits the comfort food craving.  Continue reading
